Working Together to Support Young Entrepreneurs

Published on March 31, 2022

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Academy and the International Trade Centre (ITC) have joined efforts to provide youth entrepreneurs with a customized distance learning course and lectures on intellectual property (IP) through the Ye! Community, which supports more than 30,000 members, globally.

The course, DL-001 Primer on IP for the Ye! Community, will be delivered in English, Spanish and French languages seamlessly on the WIPO Academy eLearning Center to directly reach the selected entrepreneurs. The DL-001 Primer on IP will expose the youth entrepreneurs of the Ye! Community to the fundamental aspects and contemporary issues of IP. It offers essential knowledge for safeguarding business ideas and transforming innovation potential and creativity into market value and competitiveness. The learners will be able to test their ability to apply concepts and key facts on copyright and related rights, trademarks, patents, geographical indications, and industrial designs by generating insights and gauging knowledge levels from the course.

Young people have high potential to innovate and drive change, yet many of them face challenges when it comes to exploiting their intellectual property due to lack of access to age appropriate IP education and mentorship.

The collaboration between the Academy’s Distance Learning and ITC’s Ye! Community intends to bridge knowledge gaps that exist among the youth on how to safeguard business ideas and transform their innovation potential and creativity into market value and competitiveness.

The WIPO Academy’s Distance Learning and ITC will continue to scale up this collaboration by providing access to tailored content for youth entrepreneurs under the ITC Arise Plus Philippines project funded by the European Union with the Department of Trade and Industry as lead partner. Youth entrepreneurs participating in the Arise Plus Ye! Boost Accelerator will have access to tailored materials on IP protection and e-learning content to strengthen their IP knowledge and understanding of scaling up  business operations.

The WIPO Academy and ITC will continue to further develop and implement targeted activities that accelerate knowledge acquisition and IP exposure opportunities for youth entrepreneurs worldwide.
